Overview

Outdoor Pilot Aviator stairlift on exterior deck stairs

A straight stairlift by Pilot, the home access line of Merits, rated for riders up to 350 lbs. It runs on batteries so it keeps working in a power outage, has a two position swivel seat and five safety sensors, and comes in indoor and outdoor models.

Final sale. The Aviator is ordered and fitted for your staircase, so it cannot be returned, refunded or exchanged because you change your mind or decide not to install it. This does not affect your rights if the lift is defective, damaged in shipping, the wrong item or not as described, or your rights under the Merits warranty.

The Pilot Aviator E603 carries one seated rider up and down a straight staircase. Pilot is the home access line of Merits Health Products, the Fort Myers, Florida company behind the Merits and Avid power chairs and scooters. The Aviator is rated for riders up to 350 lbs, or 300 lbs when it is fitted with the hinged rail.

The lift runs on rechargeable 24 volt batteries that charge whenever the chair is parked at one of the extra long charging stations. If the power goes out, the Aviator keeps running on its batteries, and its automatic sleep mode holds the charge for up to 20 days.

The rail can be installed on the left or right side of the stairs. Armrest width, seat height and toggle position all adjust to the rider, and the seat swivels to two positions so you can get on and off facing the landing instead of the stairs.

Key Features

  • 350 lb weight capacity (300 lbs with the hinged rail)
  • Rack and pinion drive at about 20 feet per minute
  • Fits straight stairs with an incline between 25 and 55 degrees
  • Keeps running on battery during a power outage
  • Two position swivel seat with a retractable seat belt
  • Five directional safety sensors, an overspeed governor and an electromechanical brake
  • Key switch, diagnostic display and two infrared remotes
  • Installs on the left or right side of the staircase
  • Indoor and weatherized outdoor models

Safety on every ride

Five directional sensors stop the lift if the carriage or footplate meets an obstruction on the stairs. Sensors on the armrests and seat keep it from moving unless both are in the riding position, and an overspeed governor and electromechanical brake hold the chair if anything goes wrong with the drive. A key switch lets you lock the lift so children or visitors cannot run it.

The Aviator meets the ASME A18.1 and A17.5 safety standards for stairway chairlifts.

Hinged rail for a clear walkway

When the bottom of the rail would block a doorway or hallway, the automatic hinged rail folds it up out of the way whenever the lift is not in use and lowers it again when you call the chair. The hinged rail lowers the weight capacity to 300 lbs.

Outdoor model

The outdoor Aviator is weatherized for porches, decks and outside steps. It comes with two lockable wall boxes for the remotes, a weatherproof charger box and a weather resistant cover to protect the chair when it is not in use.

Will it fit my stairs?

The Aviator is made for straight staircases with an incline between 25 and 55 degrees. If your stairs turn a corner, have a landing partway up or curve, the Pilot Navigator E604 is the custom curved model built for that.

Does Medicare, Medicaid or private insurance help pay for the Pilot Aviator E603?

Merits lists no Medicare HCPCS code for Pilot stairlifts, and we do not bill Medicare or private insurance directly. Some plans help with home access equipment, so it is worth calling yours to ask. If they say yes, we are happy to provide an invoice and proof of purchase so you can file for reimbursement.

Who installs the Pilot Aviator E603?

Your stairlift is installed in your home by a local installer approved by Pilot. A stairlift has to be fitted to your staircase and installed correctly to be safe, so call us before you order and we will explain how installation is arranged for your address.

Can I return the Pilot Aviator E603?

No. The Aviator is a final sale because it is ordered and fitted for your staircase. We cannot take it back, refund it or exchange it because you change your mind, your plans change or you decide not to install it.

That does not affect your rights if the lift arrives damaged, is defective, is the wrong item or is not as described. Those are covered by the Merits warranty and by law, and we will work with you and Merits to put it right. Please call us before you order if you have any doubt about the fit.
