Standing Mobility Scooters

A standing mobility scooter is ridden on your feet. You stand on a wide deck between four wheels, steer with handlebars and go up to 25 mph, and when you need a rest you clip on the seat and ride sitting down. The MIA FOUR and MIA SPYQE are the standing scooters we sell, and they suit people who can stand and balance but cannot walk far, who find a seated scooter stiffens their hips and back, or who want a machine that folds flat for the car and still handles grass, gravel and sand.
They are not the same thing as a standing wheelchair. A standing wheelchair lifts a seated user up to standing height with a motor and is a medical device. A standing scooter has no seat lift and no medical coding, it is a fast electric platform with a seat as an option. If you need to be raised from sitting to standing, look at our power wheelchairs with elevating seats instead. Every model below ships with the seat available as an add on, and we fit the seat, the armrests and the cargo rack to the way you plan to ride, so call us at 1-888-233-5563 before you order if you are unsure which one is right.

Who a standing scooter suits

Most of the people who buy one from us fall into three groups. The first can stand without pain but cannot walk more than a block, often after a knee or hip replacement, with COPD, or with a heart condition that limits distance rather than balance. For them standing on a deck is easier than folding into a low seat, and stepping off at the store is a single step instead of a transfer. The second group is riders who already own a seated scooter and want something faster and lighter for the yard, the trail or the beach. The third is caregivers who want a second machine the whole household can use, because a standing scooter with the seat clipped on works for a parent in the morning and a grandchild in the afternoon.

A standing scooter is the wrong choice if you cannot stand for ten minutes at a time, if your balance is poor, or if you need the chair to do the lifting. Be straight with us on the phone about that and we will point you at a seated all terrain scooter or a power chair instead. We would rather lose the sale than ship a machine you cannot ride.

The MIA standing scooters

MIA builds two frames and we sell both in every version. The FOUR is the full size deck on 14.5 or 15 inch wheels, with a 3600 watt twin hub motor in the X2 two wheel drive and a 7200 watt four motor drive in the X4. The X4 climbs a 30 degree grade, carries 330 lb and runs up to 75 miles on a charge in two wheel drive mode. The X2 carries 300 lb and runs 50 miles, and the X2 GT stretches that to 62 miles with the bigger battery. All three fold to 17.7 inches high for a trunk, and all three take the same seat, armrests, rear rack and golf bag holder.

The SPYQE is the lighter frame on 12 inch wheels, two inches narrower, with a 2400 watt twin motor. It carries 266 lb, folds to 17.3 inches, and runs 31 miles on the standard battery or 50 miles on the SPYQE GT. It is the one we recommend for a rider under 250 lb who rides on pavement and packed paths and wants the lightest machine to lift into a car. The FOUR is the one for grass, gravel, sand and hills, and the X4 is the one for people who will actually use four wheel drive.

Standing or seated, you choose each trip

The seat is the part that makes these mobility scooters rather than toys. It bolts to the deck on a quick connection, and the armrests and a backrest come with it, so you can ride standing on a short trip and seated on a long one. Customers who ordered the seat told us the same thing in different words, that they stand when they feel good and sit when they do not, and the scooter does not care which. We photographed every model seated and standing so you can see the riding position before you buy, and those photos are on each product page.

Speed, and where you can ride one

Every model here reaches 25 mph, which is the US limit for this class of machine. That speed puts it outside the pedestrian rules that cover a 5 mph mobility scooter. Plan a standing scooter as a road and private property vehicle first. It rides the edge of the road where your state allows, bike lanes where the city allows, trails, parks, campgrounds, beaches and your own land. It does not belong on a crowded sidewalk at full speed, and it has a slow mode for the times you must share one. Our state by state road rules guide explains how each state treats faster mobility devices.

Every model has dual LED headlights with an integrated tail and brake light, hydraulic disc brakes front and rear, and a swappable 60 volt battery you can charge indoors. The battery is lithium, so it ships by ground freight and cannot fly.

Folding and transport

The handlebar column folds down to 17.7 inches on the FOUR and 17.3 inches on the SPYQE, so the scooter lies flat in an SUV or a van. The SPYQE weighs the least and is a one person lift for a fit adult. The FOUR X4 weighs 110 lb, which is a two person lift or a ramp. If you will carry one behind a car instead, the scooter carrier finder checks it against our hitch lift and trailer.

What we tell callers about standing scooters

Three things come up on nearly every call. First, the deck height. You step up about 8 inches onto the deck, so if a curb is hard for you, order the seat and plan to mount from a seated position. Second, wind. At 20 mph on an open road the wind is real, and riders who are thin or frail prefer the seated position with the backrest. Third, the battery. The 35 Ah battery on the X4 and X2 GT is the one to buy if you ride more than 25 miles a day, and a spare swaps in seconds. Everything else, from the golf bag holder to the trailer hitch, is on the product page options list.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a standing mobility scooter?

An electric scooter with a wide deck on four wheels that you ride standing, with a seat available as an add on so you can also ride sitting down. The MIA FOUR and MIA SPYQE are the ones we sell. They reach 25 mph, fold for the car and carry 266 to 330 lb depending on the model.

Is a standing scooter the same as a standing wheelchair?

No. A standing wheelchair raises a seated person to standing height with a motor and is a medical device. A standing scooter is ridden on your feet and has no lift. If you need help getting from sitting to standing, see our power wheelchairs with elevating seats.

Can I add a seat to a standing scooter?

Yes. Every MIA model takes the MIA seat with armrests and a backrest on a quick connection, and it comes off in a minute when you want to ride standing again. Order it with the scooter and we fit it before shipping.

How fast does a standing mobility scooter go?

Up to 25 mph on every MIA model, with slower modes for paths and shared spaces. Actual speed depends on rider weight, grade and charge.

Can I ride a standing scooter on the sidewalk?

At 25 mph it is not a pedestrian device, so plan on roads where your state allows, bike lanes, trails and private property, and use the slow mode on any sidewalk you must share. Rules differ by state and city, and our state by state road rules guide covers them.

Which standing scooter is best for hills and grass?

The MIA FOUR X4. Four wheel drive, a 7200 watt motor, a 30 degree climbing rating and 15 inch tires. For pavement and packed paths the lighter SPYQE is enough.
