Overview

Ranger Discovery Caregiver power wheelchair, caregiver joystick on the push handle seen from behind the chair

The Ranger Discovery Caregiver is the 400 lb capacity Discovery set up so a caregiver or attendant can drive from behind the chair, with the joystick on a bracket at the push handle. It switches back to rider control when needed, weighs 50 lbs without batteries, folds in about 3 seconds and goes up to 20 miles on two side mounted lithium batteries.

The Discovery Caregiver comes with the caregiver joystick holder kit, which mounts the 360 degree joystick on a bracket at the push handle so the person behind the chair drives it with the rider seated. The chair can be changed back to rider control, so it suits a household where someone drives most of the time but the rider wants to take over now and then.

The chair itself is the Ranger Discovery. The frame is high strength aircraft aluminum alloy with a weather resistant finish, rated for riders up to 400 lbs and listed at 50 lbs without batteries. It folds in about 3 seconds to a package 13 in high, both armrests raise and the footrest folds flush for side transfers, and two 250W brushless motors drive it with an intelligent electromagnetic brake.

Two lithium batteries slide into the sides of the chair and pop out for charging indoors or for lightening the chair before a lift. The maker lists up to 20 miles per charge and describes the batteries as airline approved. An off board charging cord is included, and the turning radius is 32 in.

Key Features

  • Caregiver joystick holder kit mounts the joystick at the push handle
  • Switches back to rider control
  • Rated for riders up to 400 lbs, 50 lbs without batteries
  • Folds in about 3 seconds to 13 in high
  • Both armrests raise and the footrest folds flush for side transfers
  • Two 250W brushless motors with an intelligent electromagnetic brake
  • Two slide in side batteries, about 8 lbs each, with off board charging
  • Up to 20 miles per charge
  • 360 degree joystick and a 32 in turning radius

Caregiver Control

The bracket holds the joystick at the push handle, so the caregiver has the controls in hand while walking behind the chair. That makes long days out, crowded stores and steady ramps easier on a rider who tires or who cannot work a joystick for long. The chair still accepts the joystick on the armrest, so the rider can drive when they want to.

What Comes in the Box

The maker lists the chair, the caregiver joystick holder kit, the 360 degree joystick, two lithium batteries, a travel case, a charger, a tool kit and a storage bag.

How It Compares

Next to the standard Ranger Discovery, this version adds the caregiver joystick holder kit and otherwise shares the frame, the 400 lb rating, the 50 lb weight and the 3 second fold. The Maestro Caregiver chairs add a reclining backrest and a 440 lb rating. For a lighter caregiver chair, the Ranger Super Lightweight Caregiver weighs 41 lbs without its battery and carries 265 lbs.

Warranty

What does the Ranger Discovery Caregiver warranty cover?

Porto covers the Discovery Caregiver frame for 3 years and the motors for 2 years. Porto's listing gives the battery term as both 1 year and 6 months, so we confirm it with Porto before you order.

Porto does not cover damage from abuse, such as taking it through deep water or dropping it. When a covered part fails, Porto sends the replacement part and connects you with a local service provider for the repair. If something goes wrong, contact us first and we will take the claim to Porto's technical team for you.

Can the rider still drive the Ranger Discovery Caregiver?

Yes. The maker says the chair can be changed back to rider control. The joystick moves from the push handle bracket to the armrest, and the caregiver kit stays on the chair for the next time it is needed.

What is the difference between the Ranger Discovery Caregiver and the standard Discovery?

The caregiver version adds the joystick holder kit at the push handle. Both are rated for 400 lbs, weigh 50 lbs without batteries, fold in about 3 seconds and use two 250W brushless motors with two side mounted lithium batteries.

What batteries does the Ranger Discovery Caregiver use?

Two lithium ion batteries that slide into the sides of the chair, about 8 lbs each, and both come with the chair. The maker lists up to 20 miles per charge and describes them as airline approved. You can charge them on the chair or off it.

How do I order the Ranger Discovery Caregiver?

Add it to your cart on this page and check out, which takes a few minutes. You can pay in full or choose Klarna to spread the cost over monthly payments.

Can I order the Ranger Discovery Caregiver over the phone?

Yes. Call 1-888-233-5563 and we will place the order with you. All we need is your payment method and your shipping address. Extra batteries and other accessories for the Ranger Discovery Caregiver can be added to a phone order.

Does Medicare, Medicaid or private insurance help pay for the Ranger Discovery Caregiver?

We do not work with Medicare and we do not bill private insurance directly. Some private plans will reimburse you after you buy, so it is worth calling your insurer to ask. If they say yes, we are happy to provide an invoice and proof of purchase so you can file for reimbursement.

Notice to Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries. Medicare pays for equipment only when the supplier has a Medicare supplier number. Heavy Duty Mobility does not have one, so Medicare will not pay for anything we sell you. You are personally and fully responsible for payment.

The Ranger Discovery Caregiver ships direct from the manufacturer, which quotes delivery in about 1 to 5 business days for models in stock. We email you the expected ship date after you order. If you need it by a certain day, call us before you buy and we will check the timing.

Will I get tracking?

Yes. As soon as your order ships we email you a tracking link so you can follow it to your door.

Can I return the Ranger Discovery Caregiver?

Yes, within 30 days of delivery, as long as it comes back in new condition in its original boxes with all of its parts. A 15% restocking fee applies. You prepay the return shipping, and the original shipping charges are not refunded, so keep the boxes until you are sure. Items sold as open box cannot be returned.

Warranty problems are handled separately and do not count as a return. Please read the full returns policy for the details.

How does the caregiver control work?

The joystick sits in a bracket at the push handle, so the person behind the chair steers and sets the speed. Keep the speed low in stores and on crowded sidewalks so you can stop within a step. When the rider wants to drive, the joystick goes back on the armrest.

How does the Discovery Caregiver fold?

It folds in about 3 seconds to a package 13 in high, with nothing to take apart. Slide the two side batteries out first so you are lifting the 50 lb frame on its own. We can walk you through the fold by phone.

How do side transfers work?

Both armrests raise and the footrest folds flush, so nothing sits between the seat and the bed, sofa or car seat. Line the chair up, switch it off and slide across.

How do I charge the batteries?

Charge them on the chair, or pop the two side batteries out and charge them indoors with the included off board cord while the chair stays in the car or garage. Extra batteries are available by phone.

Where can it go?

The maker rates the Discovery frame for slopes up to 25 degrees and says this version handles grass, gravel, dirt and snow. Take any slope slowly and straight on, never across it, and treat loose or soft ground with care. The finish is weather resistant, but the maker publishes no water resistance rating, so keep the chair out of rain and standing water.

Will it fit in my car?

Folded, the Discovery frame stands 13 in high, and the maker lists the standard Discovery at 13 x 26 x 31 in. It weighs 50 lbs with the batteries out. Measure your trunk opening against that size and call us if you want help checking a specific vehicle.

Can I fly with it?

The maker describes the batteries as airline approved. Airlines set their own rules for lithium batteries, so confirm with your carrier before you book and have the battery details ready. We can give you those by phone.

How is my chair delivered?

Delivery to your curb is free. Check the packaging and the chair before you sign for it, and call 1-888-233-5563 if anything looks wrong.

Can I pay over time?

Yes. Choose Klarna at checkout to pay over time. See how financing works.

Can I talk to someone before I buy?

Yes. Call 1-888-233-5563. Real people answer, business hours and weekends.
