Overview

Ranger Maestro XL folding power wheelchair, left facing side view

The caregiver version of the Ranger Maestro XL pairs the 21 in seat reclining chair with a joystick holder behind the backrest, so a companion drives from behind and the rider takes the joystick back when they want it. It is rated for 440 lbs, folds in about 5 seconds and runs on two 250W motors.

This is the Ranger Maestro XL Reclining with the caregiver operation kit fitted. The joystick clips into a holder behind the backrest for the person pushing, and moves back to the armrest in seconds when the rider wants to drive. The 21 in seat gives 2 in more width than the standard Maestro, and the backrest reclines with an easy reach handle at the rider's side.

The frame is aircraft grade aluminum alloy and folds in about 5 seconds with nothing to take apart. Four shock absorbers, two front and two rear, smooth out grass, gravel and rough pavement, two 250W motors drive the large rear wheels, and the chair is rated for riders up to 440 lbs. The memory foam seat cushion has a mesh cover that comes off for washing, and there is a storage compartment under the seat.

The maker's caregiver listing does not repeat the Maestro XL's measurements. Its standard Maestro XL listing gives 52 lbs without batteries, two 24V 6Ah lithium batteries of 4 lbs each, up to 18 miles per charge and a folded size of 24 x 13 x 31 in, and we confirm those figures for the caregiver version before you order.

Key Features

  • Caregiver joystick holder behind the backrest for driving from behind
  • Joystick moves between the armrest and the rear holder in seconds
  • 21 in wide seat
  • Reclining backrest with an easy reach handle at the rider's side
  • Rated for riders up to 440 lbs
  • Folds in about 5 seconds without disassembly, with a lift handle under the seat
  • Four shock absorbers, two front and two rear
  • Two 250W motors
  • Memory foam seat cushion with a removable washable mesh cover

Caregiver Control

With the joystick in the rear holder, the caregiver steers from the push handle through aisles, ramps and crowds while the rider sits back. The joystick unclips and moves to the armrest whenever the rider wants to drive, so one chair serves both.

How It Compares

The Maestro Caregiver and the Maestro XL Caregiver share the same kit, the same 440 lb rating and the same motors. The difference is the seat, 19 in on the Maestro and 21 in on the XL, which the maker lists at 52 lbs without batteries against 50. If a 21 in seat is still tight, the Maestro XXL has a 24 in seat but is not offered with the caregiver kit.

Can the rider still drive the Ranger Maestro XL Caregiver?

Yes. The joystick moves between the armrest and the rear holder in seconds, so the rider drives when they want to and the caregiver takes over when that is easier.

What is the difference between the Ranger Maestro XL Caregiver and the Maestro Caregiver?

The seat. The XL has a 21 in seat and the standard Maestro has a 19 in seat. Both have the rear joystick holder, recline, carry 440 lbs and use two 250W motors.

How wide is the Ranger Maestro XL Caregiver?

The seat is 21 in wide. The maker lists the standard Maestro XL at 24 in wide overall with the footrest open, and we confirm that figure for the caregiver version on request.

How do I order the Ranger Maestro XL Caregiver?

Add it to your cart on this page and check out, which takes a few minutes. You can pay in full or choose Klarna to spread the cost over monthly payments.

Can I order the Ranger Maestro XL Caregiver over the phone?

Yes. Call 1-888-233-5563 and we will place the order with you. All we need is your payment method and your shipping address. Extra batteries and other accessories for the Ranger Maestro XL Caregiver can be added to a phone order.

Does Medicare, Medicaid or private insurance help pay for the Ranger Maestro XL Caregiver?

We do not work with Medicare and we do not bill private insurance directly. Some private plans will reimburse you after you buy, so it is worth calling your insurer to ask. If they say yes, we are happy to provide an invoice and proof of purchase so you can file for reimbursement.

Notice to Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries. Medicare pays for equipment only when the supplier has a Medicare supplier number. Heavy Duty Mobility does not have one, so Medicare will not pay for anything we sell you. You are personally and fully responsible for payment.

What comes with the Ranger Maestro XL Caregiver?

Call us before you buy and we will confirm exactly what comes in the box.

How long until my Ranger Maestro XL Caregiver arrives?

The Ranger Maestro XL Caregiver ships direct from the manufacturer, which quotes delivery in about 1 to 5 business days for models in stock. We email you the expected ship date after you order. If you need it by a certain day, call us before you buy and we will check the timing.

Will I get tracking?

Yes. As soon as your order ships we email you a tracking link so you can follow it to your door.

Can I return the Ranger Maestro XL Caregiver?

Yes, within 30 days of delivery, as long as it comes back in new condition in its original boxes with all of its parts. A 15% restocking fee applies. You prepay the return shipping, and the original shipping charges are not refunded, so keep the boxes until you are sure. Items sold as open box cannot be returned.

Warranty problems are handled separately and do not count as a return. Please read the full returns policy for the details.

How does the caregiver control work?

The joystick clips into a holder behind the backrest, so the person pushing the chair drives it from the push handle. Keep the speed low indoors and in crowds. When the rider wants to drive, unclip the joystick and move it to the armrest holder.

How do I recline the backrest?

Use the handle at the side of the chair to release the backrest, set the angle and let go to hold it. Bring the backrest upright before anyone drives.

How does it fold?

It folds in about 5 seconds with nothing to take apart, and the handle under the seat gives you a grip. Take the batteries out first so you are lifting the frame alone. We can walk you through it by phone.

Where can it go?

The four shock absorbers and large rear wheels handle grass, gravel and uneven pavement as well as indoor floors. Take slopes slowly and straight on with the backrest upright. The maker publishes no water resistance rating, so keep the chair out of rain and standing water.

Will it fit in my car?

The maker's standard Maestro XL listing gives a folded size of 24 x 13 x 31 in and 52 lbs without batteries, and says the folded chair fits most small trunks. Call us with your trunk measurements and we will confirm the figures for the caregiver version.

Can I fly with it?

The maker describes the chair as suited to planes, buses, trains and cruise ships. Each airline sets its own battery rules, so ask us for the battery rating and confirm with your airline before you book.

How is my chair delivered?

Delivery to your curb is free. Check the packaging and the chair before you sign for it, and call 1-888-233-5563 if anything looks wrong.

Can I pay over time?

Yes. Choose Klarna at checkout to pay over time. See how financing works.

Can I talk to someone before I buy?

Yes. Call 1-888-233-5563. Real people answer, business hours and weekends.
